Who Was James Allen?

James Allen (28 November 1864 – 24 January 1912) was a British philosophical writer known for his inspirational books and poetry and as a pioneer of the self-help movement.

His best-known work, As a Man Thinketh, has been mass-produced since its publication in 1903. It has been a source of inspiration to motivational and self-help authors.

Born in Leicester, England, into a working-class family, Allen was the elder of two brothers. His mother could neither read nor write. His father, William, was a factory knitter.

In 1879, following a downturn in the textile trade of central England, Allen's father traveled alone to America to find work and establish a new home for the family.

Within two days of arriving his father was pronounced dead at New York City Hospital, believed to be a case of robbery and murder.

At age fifteen, with the family now facing economic disaster, Allen was forced to leave school and find work.

For much of the 1890s, Allen worked as a private secretary and stationer in several British manufacturing firms.

In 1893 Allen moved to London and later to South Wales, earning his living by journalism and reporting.

In South Wales he met Lily Louisa Oram (Lily L. Allen) whom he then wed in 1895.

In 1898 Allen found an occupation in which he could showcase his spiritual and social interests as a writer for the magazine The Herald of the Golden Age.

At this time, Allen entered a creative period where he then published his first of many books, From Poverty to Power (1901).

In 1902 Allen began to publish his own spiritual magazine, The Light of Reason, later retitled The Epoch.

In 1903, Allen published his third and most famous book As a Man Thinketh. Loosely based on the Biblical passage of Proverbs 23:7, "As a man thinketh in his heart so is he," the small work eventually became read around the world and brought Allen posthumous fame as one of the pioneering figures of modern inspirational thought.

The book's minor audience allowed Allen to quit his secretarial work and pursue his writing and editing career. In 1903, the Allen family retired to the town of Ilfracombe where Allen would spend the rest of his life. Continuing to publish the Epoch, Allen produced more than one book per year until his death in 1912.

There he wrote for nine years, producing 19 works.

Following his death in 1912, his wife continued publishing the magazine under the name The Epoch. Lily Allen summarised her husband's literary mission in the preface to one of his posthumously published manuscripts, Foundation Stones to Happiness and Success saying:

"He never wrote theories, or for the sake of writing; but he wrote when he had a message, and it became a message only when he had lived it out in his own life, and knew that it was good. Thus he wrote facts, which he had proven by practice."[1]

James Allen is still relevant today. His book "As a Man Thinketh" was converted into an audiobook entitled "As A Woman Thinketh" in 2015.

That same year, "Through the Gates of Good, or Christ and Conduct" was also released in audiobook format.

In 2016, an audiobook entitled "The Secret of Abounding Happiness" by James Allen, William Walker AtkinsonFlorence Scovel Shinn & Hillary Hawkins was released.

In 2020, "Morning and Evening Thoughts for the Soul, 31 Days of Wisdom", "New Thought Theatre" and "From Passion to Peace" were released as audiobooks and James Allen is listed as an author on all three books. His works live on.

  1. Great author indeed. Always having something to write about.

  2. For the fact that James Allen only wrote on the things he has practicalized as attested to by his wife, this book sure seems to be an interesting read.

  3. DR.DENNIS EKWEDIKE: Great author that walked the talk. He was an extra ordinarily great author.

  4. Allen is a man of letters who wrote no theories but reality, what he had passed through in life and practised. A great man in summary

  5. Everyone seemed to have overlooked the most important aspect of the life of James Allen - that he had to drop out of School when he was barely a kid (15 years) in order to take care of the family his father left behind and thus became one of the foremost "self-schooled" authors in this World

The Richest Man In Babylon - Chapter 1

The Richest Man In Babylon By George S Clason Chapter 1 The Man Who Desired Gold Bansir, the chariot builder of Babylon, was thoroughly discouraged. From his seat upon the low wall surrounding his property, he gazed sadly at his simple home and the open workshop in which stood a partially completed chariot. His wife frequently appeared at the open door. Her furtive glances in his direction reminded him that the meal bag was almost empty and he should be at work finishing the chariot, hammering and hewing, polishing and painting, stretching taut the leather over the wheel rims, preparing it for delivery so he could collect from his wealthy customer. Nevertheless,' his fat, muscular body sat stolidly upon the wall. His slow mind was struggling patiently with a problem for which he could find no answer. The hot, tropical sun, so typical of this valley of the Euphrates, beat down upon him mercilessly. Beads of perspiration formed upon his brow ...

The Richest Man In Babylon - Chapter 7

The Richest Man In Babylon By George S Clason Chapter 7 - The Walls of Babylon Old Banzar, grim warrior of another day, stood guard at the passageway leading to the top of the ancient walls of Babylon. Up above, valiant defenders were battling to hold the walls. Upon them depended ihe future existence of this great city with its hundreds of thousands of citizens. Over the walls came the roar of the attacking armies, the yelling of many men, the trampling of thousands of horses, the deafening boom of the battering rams pounding the bronzed gates. In the street behind the gate lounged the spearmen, waiting to defend the entrance should the gates give way. They were but few for the task. The main armies of Babylon were with their king, far away in the east on the great expedition against the Elamites. No attack upon the city having been anticipated during their absence, the defending forces were small. Unexpectedly from the north, bore down ...

The Science Of Getting Rich - Chapter 1

Chapter 1 - The Right to Be Rich Whatever may be said in praise of poverty, the fact remains that it is not possible to live a really complete or successful life unless one is rich. No man can rise to his greatest possible height in talent or soul development unless he has plenty of money; for to unfold the soul and to develop talent he must have many things to use, and he cannot have these things unless he has money to buy them with. A man develops in mind, soul, and body by making use of things, and society is so organized that man must have money in order to become the possessor of things; therefore, the basis of all advancement for man must be the science of getting rich. The object of all life is development; and everything that lives has an inalienable right to all the development it is capable of attaining. Man ’ s right to life means his right to have the free and unrestricted use of all the things which may be necessary to his fullest mental, spiritu...
